01

Housing

Ringtail lemurs need a very large enclosure — at minimum 12×12×8 feet — with extensive climbing structures, branches, and platforms. They are highly active and arboreal. Outdoor enclosures with UV access are ideal in warm climates. Indoor enclosures need full-spectrum UV lighting. Temperature must stay above 60°F.

02

Diet & Nutrition

Feed a varied diet of commercial primate biscuits, fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens. Supplement with calcium and vitamin D3. Avoid high-sugar fruits in excess, onions, and processed foods. Ringtail lemurs are prone to obesity — monitor portions carefully. Fresh water always available.

03

Social Needs

Ringtail lemurs are highly social and should be kept in pairs or groups whenever possible. They communicate through scent marking, vocalizations, and body language. They form strong bonds with their owners but still need conspecific companionship. Isolation causes severe stress and behavioral problems.

04

Health & Veterinary Care

A primate-experienced exotic vet is essential. Annual bloodwork, fecal exams, and dental checks are standard. Ringtail lemurs are prone to dental disease, obesity, and metabolic bone disease. They are also susceptible to human respiratory viruses — always wash hands before handling and avoid contact when ill.

05

Legal Considerations

Lemur ownership is regulated or prohibited in many US states. A USDA license may be required depending on your state and intended use. Exotic Kingdom provides full documentation, health certificates, and state-specific legal guidance at the time of purchase.
